Eoin Morgan retired from international cricket last week after an illustrious career. A career that saw many ups and downs comes to a sudden end. He was phenomenal throughout his cricketing journey, wherever he played. Fans worldwide will remember him as one of the greatest cricketers to wear the captain’s armband. Eoin Morgan not only crowned England with their first-ever world cup, but he also revolutionized the method of their game.

Eoin Morgan was Irish by birth. He started his international cricket playing for Ireland in 2006. In 2007, he made it into Ireland’s national squad for the ICC Cricket World. In 2009, he debuted for England against the Netherlands. Since then, Eoin Morgan had the sky as his only limit. He became an integral part of England’s white-ball squads. Unfortunately, he couldn’t achieve much in the red-ball format, but it didn’t stop him from becoming significant in the game. Throughout his career, Eoin featured in 246 ODIs and 115 T20is, scoring 7701 and 1805 runs, respectively. An average of 39.56 in ODIs and 28.58 in T20is doesn’t look too convincing on paper, but the impact counts.

Eoin Morgan was appointed English captain just before the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. The campaign was a disaster for the English side, as they failed to make it into the knockout stages. Despite the horrible campaign, the board and staff supported Morgan and trusted the process. The whole English team went into rebuilding, and the new captain infused a new spirit and confidence. Stars were born, and England became a team to reckon with. Under Eoin Morgan, England made it into the finals of the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup and semi-finals of ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Unfortunately, the team was defeated on both occasions by the West Indies and Pakistan, respectively. However, 2019 was the year that carved their names in the history books when England beat New Zealand in the final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup by “the barest of margins”. Eoin Morgan became the first captain to crown England with world cup glory.

Eoin’s form had been a point of concern. He was leading the team very well, but his contributions were not worth mentioning. There were rumours that he may retire, which many overruled. However, during England’s last series of encounters against the Netherlands, the former captain scores two ducks. It is when he consulted the coaches and support staff and decided to step down and retire from international cricket. His act was full of selflessness and a lesson for many. He quit because he realized he wasn’t contributing much to the team. Thus, a very noble end to a highly acclaimed career.
