Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, and now Joe Root. Three of the ‘fab four’ have given up tests captaincies of their respective sides. The latest to bite the dust is Englishman Joe Root. An ever-so stylish right-hand bat and has been the backbone of the English batting order for quite a long time now. The prolific batsman announced his stepping down from the honorable post on 15th April 2022. In the past couple of years, England’s performance has been way below par. The wounds are fresh from the 4-0 Ashes trounce and 1-0 defeat at the Caribbean. The ODI world champions have just managed one win out of seventeen test matches since February 2021. Currently, England is at the bottom of the World Test Championship points table. Joe Root’s career as England’s test captain has been quite illustrious despite these lows.
Former skipper Alastair Cook retired from international cricket in 2017. Joe Root, the obvious choice to lead the English side, succeeded him. The right-hand batter started his captaincy journey with flying colors. The English side under Joe Root defeated South Africa at home in 2017. Joe Root holds the record for most test wins as England’s captain (27 wins). England won 8 bilateral series out of nineteen under Root’s captaincy. Some of the greatest highlights of Root’s captaincy were defeating India by 4-1 at home and defeating Srilanka 3-0 away in 2018.
Joe Root’s Ashes career as captain has been on the lower side. Under his captaincy, England managed to win just two Ashes tests in the three Ashes series. Both these wins came in 2019 at home. Despite winning two games, England failed to refrain Australia from retaining the Ashes. Moreover, England could not win a single test match in Australia under Joe Root. The English side lost 4-0 on both occasions, i.e., 2017-18 and 2021-22.
