Manchester United is one of the most dynamic clubs in football. The English club is known for its illustrious past and the superstars it had in the team. Since the past decade, Manchester United has not been the club fans used to know and admire. A ship of heroes that became champions somehow lost its way and sank into deep seas. This article is all about the rise and fall of this top club.

THE RISE

Manchester United FC had its actual peak from 1986, with the arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson was appointed as the coach of the club in 1986. He is considered one of the most influential coaches and became the most successful coach in the club’s history. His first success came in 1989 with the FA cup. The United had no seeing backward from that point.

FERGIE’S FLEDGLINGS

The Manchester United FC had its golden period in the mid-90s. The team then consisted of players like Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, the Neville brothers, and Nicky Butt. These players are well-known as the “Class of 92”. They all became world-class players and won trophies after trophies for the club.

FERGUSON’S TROPHY CABINET

During his tenure from 1986-2013, Alex Ferguson 895 games with Manchester United. He managed to win more than half of Manchester United’s total trophies, 38 in total. These included 2 Champions League titles and 13 Premier League titles, including a treble in the 1998-99 season. A treble is a victory in the three most important competitions at the club level. Manchester United went on to win the FA Cup, Premier League title, and a Champions League.

CRISTIANO RONALDO SUPREMACY

Since then, Manchester United has had to wait a long time for a Champions League title. Then came Cristiano Ronaldo, a young boy from Portugal aiming to make a name for himself. Under the guidance of Alex Ferguson and arguably the best player of the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, the Red Devils went on to win the Champions League 2007-2008 season. The club in that season had the experience of Ryan Giggs, and notable mentions were Wayne Rooney, Edwin Van Der Sar, and Rio Ferdinand. In the same season, Manchester United also won the Premier League title. UCL finalists Chelsea finished second in the league.

RONALDO DEPARTS

Ronaldo joined Real Madrid in the 2008-2009 season. After his departure, Manchester United didn’t win the Champions League title despite making the finals twice. However, they were still the best club in England, winning Premier League twice.

FALL

Sir Alex Ferguson retired from his post after the 2012-2013 season. Since then, Manchester United had not been the same club it used to be. There were several reasons for this downfall. Following are just some of them.

MISMANAGEMENT

Since Ferguson, many managers and coaches joined Manchester United, but none of them were able to make a mark. The first one was David Moyes. Under Moyes, the football club had its worst start since 1989. Moreover, their elimination in the first round of FA club shocked the fans of the sport worldwide. A lot of upsets took place, including a defeat from Swansea. Fans were disappointed and demanded the sacking of Moyes, which happened. A six-year contract ended in just ten months.

Van Gaal joined after Moyes’ departure. He, too, had a slow start. However, despite starting badly, he managed to bring the club in the top 4s and qualified for Champions League. But Van Gaal was not a famous personality in the United dressing room, and many players turned against him. In 2016, two years after he won the FA Cup with United, he was sacked.

Jose Mourinho joined next. The club did somewhat better in his tenure but still wasn’t able to regain its lost glory. During his tenure, Manchester United won the Europa League and qualified for the Champions League. However, Mourinho left the post before the end of his contract.

FLOP SIGNINGS

After 2013, Manchester United made a lot of flop signings that contributed to its fall. The most notable one was Angel Di Maria, which happened under Van Gaal. Di Maria was considered as Ronaldo’s replacement and was also given his number 7. However, he returned with nothing but disappointments.

CURRENT STATE

The current coach of Manchester United is Ole Gunna Solksjaer. The best thing for the club this season is the return of Ronaldo. The fans expect him to do wonders for the club as he used to do. As of now, Manchester United is placed in the sixth spot in the Premier League points table.
