Earlier this year, AMD announced its collaboration with tech giant Samsung to manufacture its Exynos chip. Advanced Microdevices (AMD) has been a name to reckon with considering the manufacturing of microprocessors. They have been a massive competition to companies like Intel and Nivida.
AMD is keen to provide RDNA 2 graphics technology to create Exynos mobile system-on-chip for Samsung. It Is said that the microchip will increase GPU performances in Samsung flagship devices. AMD describes this chip as “next-generation Exynos SoC.” The GPU will be using AMD’s popular RDNA 2 technology, which will enable some new features. However, not a lot of information is available yet, since Samsung has not provided any details. Samsung was expected to release details by the end of this year, and we are in December already. So this is something that is anxiously awaited.
AMD CEO Lisa Su said in the official announcement, “The next place you’ll find RDNA 2 will be the high-performance mobile phone market. AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market. We’re happy to announce that we’ll bring custom graphics IP to Samsung’s next flagship mobile SoC with ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities.
We’re looking forward to Samsung providing more details later this year.”
Samsung uses Exynos as a brand name for its processors. Flagship phones go with Snapdragon or Qualcomm, while the rest are equipped with Exynos. However, they are considered slightly less performant than Qualcomm and Snapdragon. But using the RDNA 2 technology has raised expectations from Exynos. Will this be a breakthrough production by AMD? Only time will tell.
Samsung all but confirmed by name that the Galaxy S22 would be the phone that finally debuted the AMD GPU, and it seems like it’ll be one heck of a performer.
