Xavi

Xavi Hernandez has been confirmed as the new manager of FC Barcelona. The step was taken after the sacking of the previous manager, Ronald Koeman, after a very disappointing run. Koeman’s tenure lasted 14 months, ending on 27th October, after a shocking loss to Rayo Vallecano.

THE CHALLENGE

Xavi doesn’t have an easy job in hand. He has had been associated with a Qatari club Al Sadd, gaining good experience before returning to his home club. He has joined the club when facing financial setbacks, and Barca’s mainstay, Lionel Messi, is no longer with the club. The Spanish club limited its signings this season due to those financial constraints.

Moreover, Barcelona is trailing at 9th place in La Liga points table and 2nd place in its Champions League group. They have must-win matches in the next few days. FCB has already lost against Real Madrid in the infamous El Classico. The new signings in Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia are yet to show their best. Sergio Aguero is going through some cardiac problems, and there is a rumor that he may retire soon. For starters, Aguero is out for at least three weeks. So, you can imagine the challenge Xavi has to face with the club he grew.

HOW CAN XAVI CHANGE BARCELONA’S FORTUNES?

The 41-year-old manager has been associated with the club since his early days. He got into the team through an emerging program and was part of FC Barcelona’s greatest victories, including two trebles. He was the main component of the lineup alongside Messi, Andres Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets. Thus, Xavi is aware of the club culture and has that patriotic sense with the team, which could do wonders for Barcelona.

Xavi rejected the offers to coach Barca previously, as he felt he wasn’t experienced enough. But those valuable years with Al Sadd have given him the value required to be there with one of the greatest clubs of all time.  He leads Al Sadd to the league title in his second season.

Ronald Koeman’s problem was the approach that he transferred into the team. He tried making Barcelona an attacking team, with crossing being its more element. On the other hand, Barcelona has been a passing approach team during its peak days. Xavi has seen the best days of the club and can bring back the glory.
